Show the library some love at fundraiser

Wondering what to do for your Valentine?

Try an event that is a heartfelt expression of love for your special someone and for the library.

Love at the Library ... the Second Time Around is 7-9:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 11.

“We chose that weekend because there doesn’t seem to be any regularly scheduled Valentine event in Anacortes,” said Cynthia Harrison, library director. “It’s an opportunity for couples or friends to celebrate Valentine’s Day with community spirit.”

The second annual event includes music by Fidalgo Swing, love poetry read aloud by firelight in the upstairs reading area, wine by the glass in Nick’s wine cafe, party foods including cheeses, savories and favorite local flavors, delectable chocolates including a chocolate fountain and other sweet indulgences and silent auction themed packages including romantic getaways.

Tickets, $40, are available at the Anacortes Public Library.

The event is sponsored by the Anacortes Public Library Foundation with help from donors: Dr. Philip Madden, D.D.S., Puget Sound Energy, Dr. David Olausen, D.D.S., Shahnaz Ally-Gard, Cornerstone Home Lending, Williams & Nulle PLLC, Avenue Catering and How It Works.

The Love at the Library committee, a sub-committee of the library foundation, is made up of Sharon Swan, Nick Alphin, Marilee Maricich, Carrie Tisinger, Lara Dunning and Harrison.

The foundation provides funding for things outside the library’s budget.

At the event, Boy Scouts will meet guests at the door to take coats and direct them inside. A violinist will play near the entry. Once inside, attendees can listen to music by Fidalgo Swing. Shakespeare Northwest will perform a short scene from “As You Like It.”

Professor Arthur Solomon will be back to read poetry. He’s had a lifelong love of Shakespeare and acted in a traveling Shakespeare troop earlier in his life. His poetry reading last year was popular, Harrison said. He will choose different poems for this year.

Silent auction items include Garden Package (one hour one-on-one with a Master Gardener, gift certificates from Ace and Christianson’s Nursery, a book and a two-hour clean-up from Simply Yards), Boudoir Photo Package (one-hour session and CD with photographer Suzanne Fogarty, a Boudoir gift certificate, make-up and hair by the Red Salon, 2Q nails gift card and a Sugar Shack spray tan), Kids R Best (a library memorial brick, dogs for four from Juicy Dog, San Juan Lanes gift certificate and four movie tickets to Anacortes Cinemas), Anacortes Getaway (couples kayak package for Deception Pass, lunch for two at Gere-a-Deli, dinner for two at Cameron’s, two one-day passes from Thrive and two tickets for an Anacortes Community Theatre show), Coffeehouse Package (bags of coffee and class, coffee and chocolates for two from Johnny Picasso’s), La Conner Getaway (couples massage from Salon Rouge, one-night stay at Channel Lodge Inn and a gift card for Nell Thorn Restaurant & Pub) and single items: flower arrangement from Donatello and Silversmith artist from Burton Jewelers.

A giving tree will be back this year with tags for things the library could use, like chairs and a table for the teen area, CDs and a Kindle player.
