More volunteers mean less ivy at Rotary Park

Rotarians spruced up Rotary Park on Saturday, and another attack on the ivy there is coming on Saturday, Sept. 11.

A local group is taking the 9/11 National Day of Service to heart with plans to clean up the popular park east of the Cap Sante Boat Haven. Volunteers will be cutting back ivy along the trail leading to the gazebo at the foot of Cap Sante from 9 a.m. to noon. Burgers, hot dogs and drinks will be provided for an after-work lunch.

The group organizing the event is trying to get small businesses, community clubs and churches involved, said Aaron Foster. They’d also like the day of service to be an annual event in Anacortes with the group taking on a different project each year.

Anyone wanting to participate can contact Don Bowker at (360) 941-1456 or .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address). Volunteers are asked to bring gloves, hand clippers, small saws, hoes, pruning shears and hedge trimmers.

The National Day of Service is in memoriam of the events on September 11, 2001. It is an initiative organized by MyGoodDeed Inc., in close partnership with the Corporation for National and Community Service, HandsOn Network and the National September 11 Memorial and Museum. On Saturday, a group of Anacortes Rotary Club members and student volunteers removed ivy from the park and pruned bushes along walkways. They also sanded and painted the gazebo and picnic tables and repaired some recent vandalism at the gazebo.
