Overall crime is down slightly here, but there are still areas of concern for police.
Drug use — especially heroin, methamphetamine and marijuana — daytime residential burglaries and nighttime car prowls persist. They’re areas the department will continue to focus on. In the big picture, Chief Bonnie Bowers said the community has low crime numbers and the department has handled the challenges of the recession well.
“The Anacortes Police Department has weathered the extended downturn in the economy better than some of our neighbors,” Bowers wrote in the department’s 2011 annual report. “We have tightened our belts, sought assistance from outside resources and reallocated the resources we do have in order to continue to provide excellent service to our community.”
