Sidewalk improvements by the city of Anacortes to Ninth Street between Q and Commercial avenues began today with the removal of about a dozen red maple trees.
They will be replaced with eight new European hornbeam trees, which are more pedestrian and street-friendly, said Matt Reynolds, assistant city engineer. The former trees tended to heave up the sidewalk.
The city will replace the sidewalk with leftover permeable pavers from the Depot plaza project. Construction will be typically 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday with some work on the weekends if necessary.
The project may include detours, flagging, lane closures and slower than normal traffic during the construction

In other city street news, the traffic light at Commercial Avenue and Eighth Street will remain on continuous blinking mode until a part arrives to repair it.
