A 24-year-old Anacortes man died after a head-on crash around 8 p.m. last night on Highway 20 north of Oak Harbor.
Joshua Ziegler was driving a two-door Saturn southbound on Highway 20 near North Jones Road and drifted over the center line into the northbound lane, striking an oncoming Cadillac Escalade SUV driven by a 74-year-old Woodinville man with his 64-year-old wife in the passenger seat, according to Washington State Patrol Trooper Keith Leary. Ziegler died at the scene.
The 74-year-old man was transported to Whidbey General Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. His wife was airlifted to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle with injuries that are serious but non-life-threatening.
Leary said troopers will be investigating why Ziegler crossed the center line. He noted there was no indication of drugs or alcohol present at the scene, although troopers will review the toxicology test results from the medical examiners report.
The road was closed for nearly four hours. It reopened at 11:45 p.m
