News that the real estate market here is picking up is most welcome. Housing is a big driver in the local economy, and its impact is felt at City Hall in the form of tax revenues and around the community in sales of home-related goods and services — and jobs.

The main point remains that we need to make a smart, long-term investment in a well-designed new jail. We’ll pay more, but public safety is at the top of the list when it comes to what we expect from our government.
