Troopers out in force on highways Posted by Kimberly Jacobson in Blog Sep 02, 2010 | 778 views

Anacortes American staffers have seen more Washington State Patrol troopers patrolling the region, something that will continue through the long weekend.

Emphasis patrols will begin Friday and continue through Monday. Troopers will be targeting violations that contribute to traffic collisions including DUI, speeding, aggressive driving and seat belt use.

In Skagit County, overtime grant funding will allow additional troopers to patrol throughout the holiday period.

“Troopers will be focusing on dangerous driving behaviors known to cause injury and fatality collisions,” said Capt. Ken Ginnard. “Drivers must make a plan before the festivities begin — if you are going to drink, ensure you have a designated driver. Do not take the risk of ruining your life and the lives of others.”

The public is encouraged to call 911 if they spot aggressive, impaired or unsafe drivers. The license plate number and a description of the vehicle will be helpful in assisting troopers in finding the offenders.

The WSP will also use aircraft to crack down on aggressive and impaired drivers during day and nighttime hours.

The patrol suggests taking the following precautions:
• If you plan to drive, do not drink.
• If you plan to drink, designate a non-drinking driver and give that person your keys. Never ride with a driver who has been drinking.
• Take a list of phone numbers with you for cabs or friends to call for a sober ride home.
• If possible, plan to spend the night at the event.
• If you are throwing a party, provide non-alcoholic alternatives, and never let guests drive drunk.
• Always buckle up and properly secure children in their safety seats.
• Always wear a helmet and protective gear when on a motorcycle, as these are your best defenses against an impaired driver.
